[Review] Gionee Elife S7

A few days ago, I shared the hands-on experience I had of the Gionee Elife S7. Note that this smartphone was launched in India in April earlier this year. In this post, I am going to share the detailed review of this device by a Chinese OEM.

Gionee Elife S7

Gionee Elife S7 box contents

The box contains the handset, a travel adapter, a USB cable for charging and data syncing, an OTG cable, earphones (with extra earbuds), a smart flip cover, a back cover, a SIM tray pin, four screen guards, a user guide, and a warranty card.

Gionee Elife S7 build and design

Gionee Elife S7 rear

The front and rear body of this smartphone is entirely made up of Corning Gorilla Glass 3. Thus, both the sides are prone to dust and fingerprint smudges. The body is supported by a U-shaped frame made from aviation-grade aluminium magnesium alloy. The frame is chromed to give it a shiny look.

The device has on-screen navigation buttons, instead of the usual capacitive touch buttons.

The device has a non-removable back. The SIM tray, which can hold two SIMs, is placed at the left side of the device. The pin available in the box can be used to gain access to the tray.

The design of the device is striking. The phone is good looking. It is slick and extremely light-weight.

Gionee Elife S7 features

In terms of specifications, the device features a Super AMOLED full HD display with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels. It is powered by 1.7 GHz MediaTeK 6752 octa-core processor, 2 GB RAM, 16 GB internal storage. There is no expandable memory though. It comes with a 5.2-inch screen. It runs on Android 5.0 with Gionee's skin, the Amigo OS, and packs 2,700 mAh battery. It also features a 13 MP primary camera, along with a 8 MP front-camera.

The smartphone possesses direction, gravity, acceleration, light, e-compass, proximity, gyro, linear acceleration and rotation vector sensors. It does not have temperature, pressure, ambient temperature and relative humidity sensors.

Gionee Elife S7 software

The device runs on Android Lollipop, with its own custom skin as a topping. It is called the Amigo OS. This device runs the latest version 3.0 of Amigo OS. One major improvement over previous versions of the software is in terms of speed.

There is nothing special about the custom UI layer provided by the manufacturer. Like other devices, the notifications panel can be accessed by swiping from the top of the screen. But, in order to access the quick setting panel, one needs to swipe from the bottom of the screen. While doing so, the on-screen navigation buttons come in the way. I completely disliked this extra overhead. Believe me, it isn't a feature, it's a bug.

There is no app drawer, and all the apps are placed on the home screen itself. There are tons of pre-loaded apps and games. Most of them are useless, and can't be uninstalled, thus eating up storage space even though there is no expandable storage.

Chameleon app in action

One notice-worthy app is the Chameleon app. It uses the front camera to automatically choose three colors from the environment, and then uses them to alter the theme of the phone accordingly.

Gionee Elife S7 performance and benchmarks

Gaming on this device is a joyful experience, many thanks to its 1.7 GHz octa-core processor backed by 2 GB RAM. Multi-tasking on this device is fun and quick. No lag was observed while launching and switching between apps, clicking or editing photos, watching videos or browsing the internet. Watching HD videos were sometimes troubling the processor though. High-end games performed smoothly. But they were the reason for the device to heat up. Also, if the camera app is continuously used for a longer time, the device gets heated up. Overall, the device performed well as far as daily usage is concerned.

Gionee Elife S7 stability result

AnTuTu rating: 44878

General performance: Superior
Game performance: Rather high (surpasses 90% other devices)
Battery performance: Average (surpasses 50% other devices)

Gionee Elife S7 supports 10 finger multi-touch

The device supports 10 finger multi-touch, i.e., the touchscreen can detect (and act at) ten touches at any instance in time.

Gionee Elife S7 display

The device features a Super AMOLED full HD display with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels. It comes with a 5.2-inch screen. The viewing angles are pretty good, making it easy to view at any angle. The glass is non-reflective, hence no issues to use the device in direct sunlight. The display is sharp. Color reproduction is vibrant. The touch sensitivity is good. But it is prone to dust and fingerprint smudges.

Gionee Elife S7 camera

The smartphone features a 13 MP rear camera, along with a 8 MP front-camera. This module is strong on paper, but is practically over-hyped in my opinion. It is not bad as such, but there is nothing extraordinary at the same time.

To begin with, the camera offers a lot of options. There is also a professional mode, where one can tweak exposure, ISO, white balance, aperture and focus. I tried setting a higher value for the duration of exposure. It behaved the same when I set it to a smaller value. Software bug I guess. Low light photography is not recommended, as too much noise creeps in. The shutter speed is impressive.

Gionee Elife S7 battery life

The device packs 2,700 mAh battery, which lasts really long. It lasts for a complete day when used optimally. When I say optimally, I don't mean that you use it only for basic functions like call. Running 3G every now and then, and playing your favorite games does not drain the battery drastically.

Why you should buy it?

1. Brilliant display

2. Satisfactory battery life

3. Superb build

4. Ergonomic design

5. Good performance

Why you shouldn't buy it?

1. Priced on a higher side

2. Not meant for low-light photography

3. Absence of expandable storage

Gionee Elife S7 verdict

The performance is good,
The brilliant display stood.
And given the satisfactory battery life,
Buy this device, you should.
